Preparing to Move 101 – How to be Totally Ready!

You needn’t get yourself into a muddle when moving house. Here at Britannia, we believe that preparation is key. To make sure you’re fully geared up for the big day, have a read of our top tips when it comes to making the pre-moving process as stress-free as possible.

  • Declutter all spaces

Moving house is an expensive process. So the last thing you want to do is fork out time, energy and money on moving items that you simply won’t use at your new place. This is why it’s important to have a good old clear out before you move out and cover all areas of the house. Make sure to check the loft, under the stairs, spare rooms, any outbuildings, and the garden. You may just be surprised at how many items there are hidden around your home, and just how much you’ve accumulated over time that you no longer need.

  • Identify breakables

It’s particularly important to identify which of your belongings are breakable and fragile before moving. There’s nothing worse than unpacking your boxes after moving day only to discover your favourite vase or best crockery has been cracked in transit. Create a separate pile of boxes and label them clearly in red marker pen as ‘fragile’. Also, make sure you’re prepared with plenty of bubble wrap and wrapping paper to safely pack away any breakable bits. You can also line your boxes with loose void fill chips to ensure extra protection.

  • Create an inventory

Creating an inventory will help you when it comes to ensuring none of your belongings are lost during the process of moving. Whether you make a handwritten list or get super organised with a spreadsheet – be sure to make a note of which items are in which boxes. When unpacking simply tick off each item to make extra sure nothing has left behind, giving you ultimate peace of mind.

  • Take photographs

A handy hack is to take photographs of any potentially complicated wire setups around the house that you’ll have to set up again after moving day. This is a simple and effective way to keep track of which wires go where and will undoubtedly save you from a lot of technical frustration! It might also help to photograph any shelving setups or wall displays that you’ll want to replicate in your new home too.

  • Pack your survival box

One thing that will make life much easier on moving day is to prepare a survival kit of the essentials you’ll need within the first 24 hours of moving. This should contain your everyday items such as loo roll, a toothbrush, a change of clothes, medicine, etc. You’ll be thankful later when you don’t have to rifle through every single box to locate your phone charger!

  • Give thought to your furniture

Visualise the layout of your new home before it gets to unpacking time and have a think about whether you’ll have enough space in your new place for all of your furniture. Make sure you ask the previous owners or estate agents to provide you with a floor plan with your new room dimensions and measure up any large items of furniture beforehand, such as your dining table or sofas.
